There’s a space in front of our home we’ve long wanted to fill with flowers and plants, but we kept putting it off. The past few years have been heavy, and we’ve had to be careful with how we used our limited energy. Last week, we finally began. Merl removed four bushes, leaving bare soil covered with rocks.
As I looked at that ground, I thought about the four losses he carried last year—his mother, father, younger brother, and a childhood friend. Loss leaves behind so much: memories, emotions, and weight that can linger longer than it should, quietly taking up space meant for healing.
As we started clearing the rocks to make room for new growth, I couldn’t help but see the parallel in our hearts. What we allow to remain can crowd out what God is trying to grow in us.
Obstacles, like rocks in the soil, can hinder growth—forcing us to bend under their weight and limiting what we’re able to receive. Seasons of hardship can feel like intense heat, threatening to wither what’s taking root, while dryness can leave us feeling drained and worn.
Yet even in those conditions, God meets us. He provides the living water and steady nourishment we need, faithfully sustaining us and bringing new growth in ways we may not yet see.
How about we take those rocks one by one, placing each into God’s hands, and in their place plant His promises—trusting that, in time, our rocky soil will bloom again with beauty that never fades.
Hay un espacio frente a nuestra casa que desde hace mucho tiempo deseábamos llenar de flores y plantas, pero seguíamos posponiéndolo. Los últimos años han sido difíciles, y hemos tenido que ser cuidadosos con la forma en que empleábamos nuestra limitada energía. La semana pasada, por fin comenzamos. Merl retiró cuatro arbustos, dejando al descubierto un suelo cubierto de rocas.
Mientras observaba ese terreno, pensé en las cuatro pérdidas que él sufrió el año pasado: su madre, su padre, su hermano menor, y un amigo de su infancia. La pérdida deja tras de sí tantas cosas: recuerdos, emociones y un peso que puede perdurar más de lo debido, ocupando silenciosamente el espacio destinado a la sanación.
Al comenzar a retirar las rocas para hacer sitio a un nuevo crecimiento, no pude evitar ver el paralelismo en nuestros propios corazones. Aquello que permitimos que permanezca puede terminar desplazando lo que Dios está intentando hacer crecer en nosotros.
Los obstáculos —al igual que las rocas en la tierra— pueden dificultar el crecimiento, obligándonos a inclinarnos bajo su peso y limitando aquello que somos capaces de recibir. Las épocas de adversidad pueden sentirse como un calor intenso que amenaza con marchitar lo que está echando raíces, mientras que la sequedad puede dejarnos exhaustos y desgastados.
Sin embargo, incluso en esas condiciones, Dios sale a nuestro encuentro. Él nos provee el agua viva y el sustento constante que necesitamos, sosteniéndonos con fidelidad y propiciando un nuevo crecimiento de maneras que tal vez aún no alcancemos a ver.
¿Qué tal si tomamos esas rocas una por una, depositando cada una en las manos de Dios, y en su lugar plantamos Sus promesas? Confiando en que, con el tiempo, nuestro suelo rocoso volverá a florecer con una belleza que jamás se desvanece.
